Health Star Rating
Danone’s mission, “bringing health through food to as many people as possible,” is fully aligned with the company’s sustainability strategy – the “Positive Impact Journey.” This strategy places particular emphasis on promoting healthier food choices and providing consumers with tastier and more nutritious food and beverage products.
Health Star Rating (HSR) is an external food labeling system designed to assess the nutritional quality of food products. This system helps consumers make informed dietary decisions in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). The HSR score is based on an analysis of the product’s composition, including its nutrient content. The higher the number of stars awarded, the healthier the product. Products rated at least 3.5 stars are considered suitable for everyday consumption.
As a global company, Danone voluntarily decided back in 2019 to provide additional information on the nutritional quality of its products by using the internationally recognized Health Star Rating system. This system is applied by Danone, including the DANONE group of companies in Poland, as a reference point in internal commitments and policies:
- Under Danone’s global sustainability strategy – the “Positive Impact Journey” – targets have been set for the nutritional quality of our portfolio. By the end of 2025, at least 85% of Danone brand products should achieve a rating of at least 3.5 stars in the HSR system.
- The Health Star Rating system is one of the criteria used by Danone to shape actions under its Marketing to Children Policy.
- Danone uses nutrition and health claims only for products that have achieved a rating of at least 2.5 stars in the HSR system.
- The Health Star Rating system has been identified by the global non-profit organization Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNI) as one of the key indicators used to report on the nutritional quality of food products. The HSR score takes into account nutrients such as energy value, saturated fat, sodium, total sugars, as well as the presence of fruits, vegetables, dietary fiber, and protein.
In line with our commitments set out in the “Positive Impact Journey” strategy, we strive to support consumers in making healthier food choices. Therefore, we have decided to make information on Health Star Rating available for all our dairy, plant-based products, and beverages on the website danone.pl.
